Can We Build our Way out of the Housing Crisis? The Issue of Missing Middle Housing
Denver ranks as the 7th worst city for affordability of a median home compared to median household income. And it also ranks as 2nd worst for gentrification of historically low-income neighborhoods.
Why?
Over the past decade, Denver has under built houses by nearly 65,000 units.
If we want to live in a city where you don’t have to make $110,000 a year to achieve home ownership, we need to build more houses and we need to build a wider-spectrum of houses.
So why aren’t more houses being built? And how many houses do we need? How do we also increase economic opportunity to raise incomes for working and middle-class families?
Place-based Economies are Essential to Weather Crisis
Place-based economies - which are inherently focused on the people and place of a specific community - are more resilient to withstand crises, and generally lead to healthier, happier people and better quality of life.
