Collective Nourishment

Community Food Systems

The Uplands Community Collective is rooted in the belief that agriculture is the bedrock of a strong and healthy community. In partnership with the Uplands development and the City of Westminster, we are working to preserve 5-acres of a historical farm and transform it into a community agricultural hub.

The Uplands Farm will become the heart of the Uplands community development and the heart of our community. The farm will provide employment, education, civic and economic opportunity for thousands of households in the vicinity. It will also become an example of modern agrarianism in a new urbanist environment.

Our vision is still taking form but our commitment is rock solid. We are eager to liberate a historic private parcel of farmland and open it up to feed, educate and connect the community.

The Uplands Community Collective team brings nearly 15 years experience in innovating community food system initiatives. We’ve developed one of the largest and most successful urban agriculture projects in the country, worked tirelessly on a local and national level for policy reforms that support urban agriculture, small-scale and family-farm operations, conservation practices, school meal reform, and increasing healthy food access for underserved families with innovative SNAP programming. We’ve also helped create innovative nutrition and cooking education programming in both English and Spanish, helped Somali Bantu refugees reconnect with their agricultural heritage and learn how to grow food in an urban environment, and launched food incubator programs for immigrants to go on and start their own businesses.

Grow it.

The Uplands Community Collective is working on plans for a 5-acre urban farm in the middle of the Uplands Community Development. This farm will create employment and educational opportunities for local community members, as well as producing thousands of pounds of healthy fresh produce year-round. We will also be working to help establish hundreds of backyard vegetable gardens in the surrounding neighborhoods.

Share it.

The Uplands Farm will be a hub for sharing produce, supporting small businesses, artisans and craft makers, and a place for community to come together and share meals. The Farm will be a permanent fixture in the heart of our community, creating a lifetime of priceless memories. Produce grown within the community will help support a small on-site co-op marketplace.

Cook it.

The Uplands Farm will support local food entrepreneurs to source local food. The Collective is exploring an onsite commercial kitchen where community members could attend cooking classes and learn to preserve food. It would also incubate small food businesses, who will be able to sell food on the same site it was grown and prepared.
